Nokomis Community Park Expansion Approved

Sarasota County has approved plans to expand Nokomis Community Park through the acquisition of a 1.01 acre waterfront property adjacent to the park. County commissioners unanimously approved the nearly $1.69 million project, which includes the purchase of the property for $1.37 million.

The vacant parcel sits along Curry Creek and features approximately 145 feet of waterfront frontage. The site contains native Florida vegetation, including oak trees, cabbage palms, and mangroves, creating an opportunity to preserve natural habitat while expanding public recreational space.

County officials envision a variety of future improvements that could include walking paths, picnic areas, fishing access, wildlife observation areas, and expanded access to Curry Creek and Roberts Bay. The acquisition may also allow for the expansion of the existing community garden located within Nokomis Community Park.

The property was originally purchased by a local homebuilder with plans for a single family residence. However, after using the nearby park and seeing how much the community enjoys it, the owners chose to nominate the land for Sarasota County's Neighborhood Parkland Acquisition Program.

The expansion reflects Sarasota County's continued investment in preserving open space and enhancing recreational opportunities for residents. Once the purchase is finalized, county staff will begin developing a concept plan to integrate the property into the existing park and determine future improvements.

The acquisition is expected to close later this summer following completion of the county's due diligence process.
