Nathan Benderson Park, one of Sarasota's premier recreational destinations and a world renowned rowing venue, is preparing for an exciting new chapter. The park has secured $10 million in state funding through Florida's 2026 to 2027 budget to construct a brand new indoor sports facility, further expanding its role as a year round destination for athletics, community events, and sports tourism.

The new facility will be built on Regatta Island, just south of the park's iconic finish tower, placing it at the heart of one of the nation's most recognized rowing venues. Nathan Benderson Park has earned international acclaim for hosting prestigious rowing competitions and continues to attract athletes and spectators from around the world.

Plans call for an impressive 100,000 square foot indoor facility featuring hardwood sports flooring, creating space for a wide variety of athletic events and competitions. The venue is expected to accommodate sports including volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, cheerleading, and pickleball, making it a versatile destination for athletes of all ages and skill levels. The climate controlled facility will provide year round opportunities for tournaments, training camps, and community events, regardless of weather conditions.

The expansion goes well beyond the indoor sports complex. Plans also include the construction of a new boathouse for rowing and paddling, additional community gathering and event space, and a storm resilient indoor venue designed to support disaster recovery efforts when needed. These improvements will enhance the park's ability to serve both residents and visitors while providing valuable resources for the community during emergencies.

Construction is expected to take approximately 18 to 20 months, with officials aiming for completion by August 2028. Once finished, the expanded facilities will significantly increase Nathan Benderson Park's capacity to host regional and national sporting events throughout the year.

While rowing remains the park's signature attraction, this expansion will diversify the types of events the park can accommodate. By welcoming multiple indoor sports, the new complex is expected to attract thousands of additional visitors each year, benefiting Sarasota's hotels, restaurants, retail shops, and other local businesses. Sports tourism continues to be a major economic driver for the region, and this investment will further strengthen Sarasota's position as a premier destination for competitive athletics.

Beyond the economic impact, projects like this also enhance the quality of life for local residents. Investments in recreation, public amenities, and resilient infrastructure make Sarasota an even more desirable place to live, work, and raise a family. As our community continues to grow, improvements like the Nathan Benderson Park expansion help support property values while reinforcing the area's reputation as one of Florida's most attractive places to call home.

With construction expected to begin in the near future, this ambitious expansion represents another exciting step forward for one of Sarasota's most iconic destinations. From world class rowing competitions to indoor sporting events, community gatherings, and emergency preparedness, Nathan Benderson Park is poised to play an even greater role in the region for years to come.
